The Impact of Mental Stress on Skin

In this day and age, everyone seems to be running at a million miles an hour. We often hear from individuals around us every day ‘I feel stressed’. or we notice changes in each other. Mental stress impacts our skin a huge amount. So how can we take steps to manage these issues?

Stress can affect your skin in a range of different ways. Stress causes a chemical response in your body, increasing the levels of cortisol, adrenaline and other hormones in different amounts depending on the levels of stress. This pressure can come from different aspects of your day to day life, from stress at work, family, friends or financial issues.

 

 

Stress may originally arise in your brain and body, but the consequences can play out all over your face. Stress, anxiety and similar emotional states can trigger or worsen a wide range of skin conditions. Staying in the present moment can mitigate the effects of stress on the body. Try practising yoga or meditation, or mindfulness-based stress reduction.

 

Ways to Try and Ease the Effects of Mental Stress on Your Skin

When you’re stressed, a lot of people try and tell you to just ‘try and relax’. but we all know this doesn’t work unfortunately. Stress can’t be avoided completely but there are ways to try and handle it better and reduce the chance of this mental stress affecting your skin.

Don’t neglect your skincare routine.

Try and exercise regularly.

Take time out for yourself and do something you enjoy, even if thats only for 10 minutes.

Go for a walk in the fresh air.

Try and get enough sleep.

Say no. It’s okay to set limits to lower your stress.

Talk to someone.
