How to Master Your Mind and Attention in A Distracting World

We are always rushing around from one task to another, our attention is often grabbed by distractions. We end up checking our phones during conversations, post photos of everything showing off our food, clothes or where we are in the world, and we fill up our to do lists for the next day when we have only just got in bed.

Attention makes everything grow. That’s why it has such a big impact on your happiness and your well-being. It is more than just focusing on completing a task. Our attention is used to shape our life and future. You can see what true values someone holds by observing what they pay attention to the most. Your focus is your reality.

Sight

Looking at something is not the same as seeing it properly. You look at lots of different things every day, but how many of those things do you focus your attention on fully? By starting to focus, you can train yourself to become more aware of your surroundings, and more in control.

 

 

 

Sound

We hear a lot of sounds throughout the day. Whether that’s a bird singing, music from the radio or the trees blowing in the wind. Why not try taking the sound in? Listen deeply, close your eyes and bring your attention to the sounds that appear around you. When you hear the different sounds, don’t just listen – shift your attention and focus on that specific sound.

 

 

 

Smell

Your sense of smell is very powerful, and can even trigger old memories you forgot about. Try going on a walk in nature and focus your attention on the scents that surround you and discover how they can affect your mind and body.

 

 

 

Touch

Your sense of touch affects you more than you think, however it is often overlooked. When was the last time you thought about what you were actually touching? How your clothes feel, what the water feels like when it touches your hands? It is important to focus your attention on how things feel and how it affects us.

 

 

 

Taste

Bring your attention to each meal or drink you have. We probably eat whilst working or walking from place to place and don’t even think about what our food actually tastes like. Take time to eat and enjoy the flavours it brings. Bring your attention to this and it’ll help to focus your mind.
